Going Back To Move On

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind (and that’s discounting the traditional nightmares that are the Holiday season and New Year’s)! I’ve been on an emotional roller-coaster and like a good gay I’ve kept a lot of it near my chest, not letting it see the light of day. I am now in the final days, or perhaps hours, of a countdown of sorts.

You see, I’m going back home.

This isn’t a post-holiday visit or anything like that, it’s a I need to get my life together and stop dicking around return. It’s called maturity. And while I loathe being “mature” there comes a point where you have no choice but to grow up.

You can only borrow money for so long.

You can only hide for so long.

Sometimes, you just have to own up.

And that’s what I’m doing. I’m owning up. I’m paying off my debts and joining the “real” world. I actually look forward to it. I’ve had a wonderful life/experience here in New York. I’ve learned a lot and I’ve grown as a person, but the return home is something else needed to help me grow and continue to move forward in life.

I’m not going to lie, I saw this coming almost two years ago but I managed to scrap by and prolong it. Then the doors shut. But for every door that shuts hundreds more become unlocked, you just have to turn the knob. For me there is no depression in going home, it’s just another step. I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m not back up here in a year or out in LA or who knows. But for now, home, Texas, is calling.

Somedays I Just Don’t Know

I apologize before hand for any rambling or drunkenness associated with this post. I just miss certain things in life and I’m uber confused at the moment. Traditionally I’m an upbeat positive person with the hint of a dark side. I’m okay with this. That’s me and frankly I love me. I just don’t know where to go from here. Is there anywhere to go? I feel as if I’m at the bottom and the top at the same time. Oh, well, the sun rises again tomorrow and it’s another chance to be/find the light.

Album Review: Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark

Album: Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark
Artists: Various Artists
Release: 2011
Genere: Soundtrack
Sub-Genere: Stage Musical
Rating: 2/5 Stars

The history of the Broadway flop is infamous, yet we only remember them because some producer was kind enough (or maybe wanted to recoup back some money) to put to record/disc the score that went with the show. There’s some fine examples of shows that have wonderful scores, but the book, or something else, is just way too off with the show (Anyone Can Whistle comes to mind). Sadly, Spider-Man isn’t that type of a show. The much lauded and wrecked show has seen and is seeing many hardships, and the score, by the famous half of U2 (Bono and The Edge) isn’t helping it.

The songs in Spider-Man try very hard to blend the world of theatre and arena rock, but it just doesn’t quite reach it. Sure, there’s a few tracks that are on the edge of greatness, or just about to become something greater than it’s parts; but then the creators (or someone, somewhere) reels the whole mess back in. These are songs that are constantly striving to hit the rafters but fail, and fail miserably. They all sound like, at best, a collection of U2 B-Sides (closer to C or D-Sides) then the prime of U2. Perhaps this is because Bono and The Edge haven’t written for the stage before, or maybe it’s because rock and theatre just don’t mix (not something I believe), or maybe, the real reason is Spider-Man is hard subject matter to envision on stage if you just don’t ABSOLUTELY love the character and the history you’re working with.

And that, I believe, is where the greatest problem lies. After you try to piece together the story from the album (it was released with the songs out of order from the show) you see what a murky, tangled mess it really is. Not to mention the songs are sometimes muddled in too much expoistion, not enough let the melody soar. There are a few songs, as I said before, that are pretty intresting, or fun, but nothing that will really stick with you. The best of the lot, “The Boy Who Fell From The Sky” succeeds not only cause it’s a great anthem of arena proportions, but because Bono and The Edge play to their strengths, writing with the full band. This is why the number truely works. Other than that, well, this album is a great little reminder of what is sure to be the greatest Broadway flop in current history.

Nice try boys, but leave the musical theatre writing to Andrew Lloyd Webber next time ;), after all, you only started this because of a quote from him.

Stand Out Tracks: The Boy Who Fell From The Sky, Pull The Trigger, Rise Above 1, If The World Should End

Album Review - Samuel: I Heart NY (EP)

Artist: Samuel
Album: I Heart NY
Genere: Pop
Sub-Genre: Dance Pop
Rating: 4/5 Stars

Songs about New York are numerous, I mean, let’s face it, almost all of us can think of at least, oh, I dunno, 4 or 5 songs that mention New York in it’s title. And that’s without really thinking about it. I mean, IF i asked you to think about it, you could probably come up with at least 10 or so. With that being said, I’m not really surprised when an artist names a song something to do with New York. Yet, Samuel’s new EP “I Heart NY” is kind of enfectious dance pop spread over three tracks.

The opening track, which is also the title track, is the type of song you’d hear on a summer afternoon. Bright, sunny, dunked in shimmering sweet confections of cotton candy lyrics mixed with bouncing ball beats. It’s fun, it’s festive, it’s perfect for a stroll through the city that Samuel (and much of the rest of the world) adores. The title track definately puts a different spin on the City That Never Sleeps.

Yet things change on track 2, Champagne Kisses. This is Samuel’s attempt at a dance track, and I must say he achieves it pretty well. He’s got the bounce of the old 70’s disco thumping through the beats and it sounds like something you’d hear at the height of dance night alone, or with friends, in your bedroom. Hints of MGMT’s album Oracular Spectaular comes to mind.

Track 3, I’m Still Here, is an anthem for anyone whose been in love and is STILL in love with someone who constantly puts them down, or whose going through a rough time. For me, personally, this is by far my favorite track on the EP. The lyrics alone crackle with postivity, even over what might be a negative topic. The bridge, “Whether you need me, it’s better you leave me/ I won’t stick around for you./ I’m up in the treetops, shouting my lungs out for you” conveys the emotions of someone who knows it’s over but will continue to care about the person they are leaving behind. It’s the understanding of moving on, but not forgetting, but forgiving and still caring and in this crazy world, that’s pretty damn important.

So, Mr. Samuel, I must say, I’m def looking forward to what you offer up next!
